Probably the most asked question I receive.
And I usually respond:
How many architects have you talked to? 4?
And how many answers did you get? 8?
Did the line go silent? Did they even answer your call?
hmmm… well…
What do you need?
It should be an easy answer, but it is not. Because that one question is the start of a long discussion, or it should be. Unless of course your looking for a set of plans from a pattern book - done before, multiple times, one of those, that one…
Architecture is not that uncomplicated a service and commodity.
Question that should be asked:
What Architectural Services do you need for your project (post to follow) ?
How large a home?
Where? And yes, it does matter where.
What is your budget? (Expense has a correlation to the amount of attention and detail required).
Do you know what you want?
Generally - number and size of rooms
Specifically - you want it to look like this picture - this design on this website.
What style home do you want?
Just basics?
An Architectural Statement!
Something in-between?
Are you going to build it yourself? Work with a Contractor?
For a remodel, do you have an existing set of plans? Site Survey? If not, I’ll have to measure and draw the existing before I even begin.
The Beginning of a conversation.
Why are you looking for an Architect?
Because someone said “you need an Architect”
Because you want an experienced professional to do your plans?
(ok! during Covid you cut your own hair… and how did that turn out? Your hair will grow out - this house is going to be there for a while.)
Because you saw a design on this website that appealed to you?
Because a friend provided a recommendation?
Because you know what you want, but just can’t figure out how to make it work?
Because you need some help exploring the options, the possibilities.
That is what I’m here for. How can I help you?
How much does it cost to do a set of plans for my home?
